Searching by Litigation Metadata

Within the West km interface, utilize the Advanced searching capability to search for terms within the document metadata. The litigation analyzer component "reads" and extracts key metadata from court documents and makes the fielded metadata available for searching. In addition to Litigation Doc Title and Doc Type, you also can search for Jurisdiction, Attorney, Law Firm, Company, Expert, and Court, as well as Judge.

Any of these searchable fields can also be used to narrow results with the filters on the results list.

Some things to be aware of regarding the Jurisdiction/Court and Judge fields:

  • Primary Judges are those found on the caption page; secondary judges are those referenced in the text of the document. To include secondary judges within your search, check the box for Include Secondary Judge References.
  • Court is dependent on the jurisdiction selected.

Gain deeper insight into the judge, company, expert, or attorney referenced in your documents by accessing the blue hyperlink on the person or company’s name. The hyperlink will take you directly to the corresponding profile on Westlaw.
